EMERGENCY LEAVE (EL), WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

"Boss, saya EL hari ini"

"Boss, I'm on EL today"

These are the most common phrases employees use to take Emergency Leave (EL) from work.

Have you ever wondered what does it really mean?

there is no specific legislation that governs emergency leave entitlements. However, emergency leave is typically addressed in the employment contract, company policy, or collective bargaining agreement between the employer and the employee.

In general, employees are entitled to take emergency leave for urgent and unforeseen personal reasons that require their immediate attention. The duration of the leave and whether it is paid or unpaid may depend on the terms of the employment contract or company policy.

It is crucial for employees to inform their employer promptly about the reason for their emergency leave and the expected duration of their absence. Employers have the right to ask for evidence or supporting documents to verify the emergency leave request. Failure to do so may lead to the denial of the emergency leave request. It's important to follow the company's policies and procedures for requesting and taking emergency leave. If an employee's request for emergency leave is unreasonably denied or if the employer retaliates against the employee for taking emergency leave, the employee may have legal options under the Industrial Relations Act 1967 or the Employment Act 1955.
